The turning of water
to wine (divine provision) at the wedding in Cana of Galilee is widely believed
to be the first miracle Jesus did, at least according to the gospel of John,
who was among his top 3 disciples - In John 2:11, the scripture recorded “This
is the beginning of miracles that Jesus began to do…”. John then went ahead to
record the second of miracle of Jesus in John 4:46-54 (the healing of the son
of the noble man who was at the point of death). However, before this miracle,
something VERY INTERESTING and of ETERNAL SIGNIFICANCE happened between Jesus
and the Samaritan woman (John 4:7-42). And this I believed should have been
counted as the second miracle because the GREATEST MIRACLE (salvation) took
place here – the woman not only believed on Jesus as the Messiah but went ahead
to proclaim same to others throughout the city. So it is shocking to me that
John the Apostle did not count this as a miracle and I asked the Holy Spirit
why a few weeks ago when I was studying the book of John.
The Holy Spirit said
John did not count it as a miracle because it was UNSEEN, confirming the scripture
in 2 Cor.4:18 “… the THINGS which are seen is temporary, but the THINGS which
are NOT SEEN are ETERNAL.” People can see divine provision (the first miracle).
People can see healing (the second miracle) but people cannot see SALVATION
immediately but the good news is that it carries ETERNAL IMPACT in comparism
with the other miracles recorded because the scripture says “There is joy in
heaven over one sinner that repents…” (Luke 15:10).
Jesus said in John 3:6 “That which is born of flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
One must however,
admit that though it is not so easy, especially in the times that we are in, to
focus on WHAT IS NOT SEEN, because everyone (including unbelievers) have need
for one miracle or the other, the Holy Spirit will help our focus to remain on
WHAT IS UNSEEN and ETERNAL, even as we trust Him to help us manifest the
MIRACLES THAT IS SEEN because Jesus also says “…except ye see signs and
wonders, ye would not believe.” (John 4:48).
